If you plan to visit the Undercliff Walk, we regret to inform you that the path is temporarily closed due to ongoing and significant chalk fall in the area. The safety of visitors is a top priority, so the Brighton & Hove Council have decided to close the walkway to ensure everyone’s well-being.
We understand that this may be disappointing news for those looking forward to exploring this scenic route, but we request your cooperation in this matter. Please respect the signs and fencing in the area and refrain from using the path until further notice.
For the last 2 weeks, we have seen daily specialists with ropes carrying out work and removing loose rocks to avoid falling them down onto the path.
Alternative Access Options
Although the majority of Undercliff Walk is currently closed, there are other ways to access some of the area’s key attractions. The so-called upper cliff route is open and leads you to the top of the cliffs to Ovingdean, Rottingdean and Saltdean. Visitors can still reach the beach, Molly’s Café, and Whitecliffes Café via the Rottingdean Ramp and Saltdean tunnel. While these routes may take a little longer, they offer safe access to the beach and some fantastic cafes that you won’t want to miss.
When will the Undercliff Walk Reopen?
We are closely monitoring the situation, and B&H Council will reopen the Undercliff Walk as soon as possible, once they are confident that it is safe to do so. We understand that this closure may cause inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
